Blackway - Feature Fall 2014

Based on a critically acclaimed book “Go With Me” by Castle Freeman, Blackway was shot in winter in BC’s Okanagen Valley , in and around the town of Enderby. Helmed by the wonderful Swedish Director Daniel Alfredson, DP Rasmus Videbæk and starring Sir Anthony Hopkins, Julia Stiles, Alexander Ludwig, and Ray Liotta. Blackway was a labour of love for crew and cast, and ended up a beautiful film with the careful editing of Håkan Karlsson. The remarkable BC interior locations, coupled with the talented cast and crew made author Castle Freeman’s novel came alive. We had amazing luck with the weather to give the story its look of moody, timeless unease ... Daniel’s interpretation of the story, was of a town and its people, almost held hostage in time and spirit by this vicious human monster Blackway. The whole idea of the story, is one of slow build to action with the weather, tone, pace and geography as well as the characters all playing their part in the awakening of the town.

Anyone looking for car chases, and a crazy fast pace will miss the whole reason for the film. Sir Anthony Hopkins is amazing in his portrayal of Lester, a burned out man, crushed by life, who decides he has had enough and has really nothing to lose in helping Lillian (Julia Stiles) with Nate (Alexander Ludwig) get justice. I am very proud of our film, it was a labour of love, in the cold.

The visual vibe of the film

Above is Set Dec Denise Nadredre’s cool idea for the wall of our “dive” bar. Looked amazing on camera…

Ray Liotta as Blackway … a scary dude as an actor and in real life

Meth Lab and “explosion” set shot on “stage” and location motel.

Our lovely, brilliant Director Daniel Alfredson

The final scenes in the story are basically a showdown in an abandoned lumber camp between Bad  (Blackway {Ray Liotta} and his gang) and Good (Lester { Sir Anthony Hopkins} and his small team) We built the compound in the woods outside Enderby in -40 celsius weather.. But it was a super cool and fun project. In the end it was believable and awesome, we even found a semi working bus owned by the very nice people who rented us the property. It was amazing to use and an extra character in the story ..

Anytime you get to work with such a fine cast, a fully dedicated, and completely creative crew is a blessing . Great Execs, Rick Dugdale and Mary Guilfoyle Line Producer ran a very tight, but fun team … Baron Shaver Construction, and Cam Boon Paint and crews did an amazing job. Set Dec Denise Nadredre was incredible in making the vibe happen with her team … It looked really great …

Sir Anthony Hopkins as Lester, a man at the end of his life alone, making whirly gigs and in the end with nothing to lose …

Wonderful man both on and off the screen … Alexander Ludwig and Julia Stiles were an absolute pleasure and incredibly humble and kind.

Our hero shoot out bus for the abandoned Lumber Camp set. Found in the woods a mile away. Had to be cut out of the forest by removing trees. Started up after local mechanic got it running after 25 years. Cool
