Siren Season 1 + 2 sets

We decided to incorporate a Naval Research Facility into our Siren world. The old Andre’s Wine facility in Port Moody allowed us to have a very stark, glass and wall lab structure, with long hallways and low lighting. We were stuck with the concrete pads that were built for wine making, but Baron Shaver Construction and I came up with a fairly cool working environment .. It needed to be open to view, but isolated in feeling also …

Second season also had a sub plot of an oil drilling platform ship out off the coast in Mermaid territory . The sonics from their research probes was killing the mer folk and had to be stopped . I designed a sonic cannon that was slightly over the top, but it worked fairly well both in the tank and in VFX …

End of second season, also saw the need for our human cast to descend down to the mermaid’s territory. We were tasked to build a believable sub in 1 month .. This would have been impossible without the talents of Baron Shaver and his Construction crew, who built the sub out of sheet aluminum in short time .. With the advice from Nuytco Research ltd (a local international underwater specialists), I designed a classic 3 man Sub to do the trick. It was made to be gimbaled in front of green screen to simulate going underwater. The interior was extremely well detailed by our amazing set dec team under Josh Plaw  ….The sides clamshelled open for access, as well as to simplify shooting interiors.

We also used the sub on the deck of our research ship, it was accompanied by a rental sub we got from Nuytco that we were able to graphic accordingly. The

Small one was used up on the location with the trucks and dressing of the facility.

Lots of fun design work and I felt extremely lucky to get the chance

For the Sub green screen work on stage, we opted for a simple manual gimbal system on air bags . It worked well and the underwater sequence in Season 2 episode 12 was very wonderful thanks to Terry Hutcheson and Dan Dixon our VFX magicians …
