Siren Season 3 sets
The third season of Siren was made up with many interesting challenges, and great work from everyone . The sets were numerous, and many designed by Art Directors Joanna Dunn and Carla Miranda .. I am showing just a few bigger ones that I had the pleasure of designing with my team (especially Baron Shaver Construction and Cam Boon Paint and crews) … Set Dec and Greens did wonderful work all the way through .. Fantastic ..
One additional point, I decided to sacrificed having a Set Designer for Siren, to maximize finances for more hands-on crew in Set Dec and elsewhere . Our very talented DPs were not thrilled at having to use my Sketchup work and other 2D drawings .. So a great thank you and shout out to my very patient (and talented) friend, Key Rigging Grip, Don Tupper, who did wonderful CAD work that often saved the day ..
End of season 3, we had a scripted gag where Alex has decided to shut the power off in town to halt the murderous plot using the Siren song to kill humans …
The shot needed Alex to drive his truck (which I hated) into a power transformer .. This is obviously not a small gag and could be unsafe, so with the help of Baron Construction and crew and SPFX, we decided to cable pull the truck into a gag built Transformer set piece at Riverview Hospital.. It went ok, looked amazing with great dressing, and VFX wizardry saved the day by augmenting the practical explosions ..
We had a very busy Siren S3 Episode 307. Not only did it need to be winter in Alaska but we had a massive set dec dress of a ski lodge and other locations … coupled with staggered big builds on our water tank stage of a West Coast rainforest and natural spring pool and a 110’ x 95’ Alaskan Ice Field and forest set, with Carla’s Fishing Cabin and separate interior cabin build .. Huge job in any time frame . Baron and crews build amazing raised multilevel decks, and Travis Brooks and 2 greens teams did monumental work bringing it all to life .. Fantastic lighting by DP Steve Jackson and crews …

Art Dir Carla Miranda’s Ice shack x 2
Baron Construction and teams made use of rolled polymer sheets , cut irregularly and layered to show ice breakup and expansion … It looked great, and shot well although the reflections of the above lighting needed some additional VFX magic..
Definitely worked when coupled with green screen and a built forest entry from greens …..
Next was the monumental Alaskan Rain Forest set, built on a 72’ wide x 40’ deep raised platform. The platform needed to be super strong to handle the greens and aggregate load, a ceremonial pool, and at the same time showed exposed rocks … plus it had to be safe for crew building and detailing, but also for shooting crew in dim light to be safe … Greens did a heroic job, with help from grips and construction, with huge trees and rocks .. amazing …..
For EP 206 it was also scripted that we needed a larger cave set, so Baron built it at our Andre’s stage .. It was longer, higher and no ceiling. This time Director Amanda Row wanted a bit one sea related fossils and iridescence in the rocks .. Cam and team (Vincent Prokop and Kat Gunn scenic artists) made it all look great ..
Just wanted to again show the lovely work done by our Art oo-ordinator Michelle Pan, with direction from Art Dir Joanna Dunn, on our Mer Folk Siren Hieroglyphic language .. quite amazing and beautiful, I couldn’t be happier ..
