Unspeakable limited TV series
Working on Unspeakable was an absolute honour, to tell this very Canadian tragic tale that in the end is a global story sadly repeated elsewhere was an incredible ride.. Working for Writer/ Executive Producer Robert Cooper was amazing, add the wonderful Carl Binder and Adriana Capozzi and the story was gripping and heartfelt from beginning to end. Lily Hui Exec Prod, PM George Hori kept the show running with style, it was a hard subject but we had fun making it happen … Great crew and cast. Also Unspeakable was very well received by critics and the viewing public ….
In the early 1980’s, AIDS emerged and quickly became an epidemic. Those responsible for public safety failed. Thousands died. A second virus, hepatitis C, infected tens of thousands more. People were kept in the dark, afraid to speak out. Ignorance, arrogance, politics and economics all lead to betrayal, to cover-up, to scandal. Unspeakable is told from the perspective of two families caught in a tragedy that gripped a nation, as well as the doctors, nurses, corporations and bureaucracy responsible. The series follows the decades long saga as people struggled to survive, change the system and battle for compensation for those who desperately needed it.
It began as a disease that was nobody’s fault and became a catastrophe. A federal inquiry led to finger pointing and sweeping changes to the blood system. Billions of dollars in reparations were paid. Criminal charges were laid. The repercussions are still being felt today. The worst part is that it was largely preventable. We cannot forget.
Creatively it was fairly restrictive, 70s and 80s hospitals and offices. The colours were dated and washed out, that institutional feel, but we built tons and our amazing Costume designer Maria Livingstone and Set Dec Josh Plaw (and crews) did an amazing period look show .. Baron Shaver Construction, Cam Boon Paint and crews, built the main Hospital, all the offices and the court, but it just melted into that look. So I guess we did it right .
